At Home is the Worst
I stutter the most when I am at home with family members or friends. It's horrible. I've had the weekend off and my stuttering has been awful all weekend! At work, I have the easiest time and I can't figure out why that is. When I sit down to counsel the kids or do a group therapy session, I am almost completely fluent and am only forced to use a few "tricks" to get through an approaching block. Even with colleagues, I have an easy time of it. I get home, however, and suddenly, I can't say anything completely fluent.
Could it be that when I am at work, I am "on" and this helps me to be fluent? Maybe I don't act the same at work as I do at home. Maybe I turn on a different kind of persona at work...a professional persona that somehow, psychologically, makes an end-run around stuttering.
Or maybe I don't know my ass from my elbow. *shrugs*
At any rate, it's been a source of frustration for me lately and I'd be interested to know if you notice similar trends in your professional/personal life. HAPPY GRAMMY AWARDS!!

Look I had a similar problem until I worked out what was going on. When I was at home I always "allowed" myself to be "little Stuttering Jack". When I walked through that door I took on the persona of the child within me and the stuttering came along with the package. Now when I went to the office I allowed myself to be the confident adult side of my persona and the stuttering did not like the adult side of me so did not come along for the ride. I found that I needed to "give myself permission" to be the "adult Stuttering Jack" at home. Giving yourself permission to be that persona that does not stutter is not easy but you have to do it in those places where you stutter. Act confident and if you say I am not a good actor then "behave confidently". Speak with a slightly deeper voice and do all those things that you associate with being a confident adult including walking a little slower and thinking positive and confident thoughts about yourself as a person in the home environment especially when you are speaking to those people that you stutter with the most. They are the people that "little Stanley" has feared the most.You will feel funny at the start as your inner stuttering child fights it but do it for 30 days and you will beat it. You will feel like there is a big sign above your head saying "Stuttering Stanley IS Not Being Himself". That is only natural. Anyway I have said enough. I have the same experiences, I stutter around my family but much less at work. I don't understand it and I would never try and lecture on why it is and howw to overcome it, but it is something I have definitely experienced.
When I saw family, I mean around my mother in particular. However, I don't let it bother me as I know in myself, that I now have this affliction under control. What annoys me is people who claim they have been here, and you just have to decide to beat it. If it was that simple, then we woulsn't be a stutterer in the 1st place!
